Installing a do it yourself home security system is not as hard to do these days.  The wireless home security systems that are made these days are much easier to install.  There are not a ton of cables to run just to make the do it yourself home security work. Note:  These are general instructions to give you an idea of what is involved in installing wireless home security systems.  You will want to follow the manufacturer’s instructions specifically for the do it yourself home security you choose.

Wireless Home Security Systems Installation Steps

1. Decide where you want to put the control panel.  Place it by the door you use the most.  It will also need to be near an electrical outlet that is not controlled by the switch.  Also, do not put where it can be easily viewed by burglars that can scope out where the system is from the window.
2. Decide where you want to put your security and fire sensors.  Choose a place for the inside alarm siren.  Don’t put in a place where it will be muffled, like a closet or upholstery, but you also don’t want it to be in an obvious location where a burglar can find it and destroy it.
3. Place the control panel at a height that is easy to access the keypad and read the display.
4. Although it is called a wireless home security system, there will be a wire that connects the control panel to the outlet.  Run this wire through the wall by drilling holes behind the control panel and below the outlet.  Now you can connect the two.  It is best to put in the wall to avoid tampering.  If for some reason the outlet is unplugged or the power goes out, most wireless home security systems will have a backup battery.
5. Use the owner’s manual to program the dials on the siren.  Use a small screwdriver to set the house code.  The siren will also need to be plugged into an electrical outlet that is not switch-controlled.
6. Control panel programming – to do this, use the control panel’s keypad to program the features of the alarm system.  Some of the systems will have worksheets that will help you prepare and program the control panel.
7. Install the sensors.  There will be door and window sensors to install.  There will be a magnet and a transmitter.  Attach the transmitter to the edge of the window frame or door.  Attach the magnet to the window/door.
8. If your system comes with a PIRS (Passive Infrared Motion Sensor), smoke detector, broken-glass sensor or some other type of feature, you will need to read the owner’s manual.  These are not generally too hard and should only require a few things, such as:  screws, plastic sheetrock anchors, etc.

Note:  If you have purchased a monitored home security system, it will involve connecting to a phone line.  If you are not experienced in this area, then you will want to contact an alarm company technician to help you.

Test the do it yourself wireless home security system.  The control panel will have a test mode.  Test all the sensors to be sure all the functions on the security system work.  If everything works, you are good to go.  Test your wireless home security system on a monthly basis to be sure it continues to work.
