Aceiling fan is a simple home appliance that will provide cooling comfort in the summer and circulate heat in the winter. Although installation appears simple, a ceiling fan is relatively difficult to do yourself especially if you don’t have any experience in home wiring and basic electronics. But you don’t need to hire an electrician to install a ceiling fan. You just need to properly prepare the place, have the right tools and most importantly, observe safety protocols during installation; you should be able to have a good looking ceiling fan without spending additional money for installation. Learning how to install ceiling fan just takes careful protection from an electrocution.
Preparation:
After you have purchased your ceiling fan, the first thing you have to do is to take inventory. Make sure that the kit you purchased has the bolts and parts required for a ceiling fan. Double check the bolts screws as these are often misplaced during the order. Since you usually install your ceiling fan on the lighting fixtures, be sure to purchase a ceiling fan with lights. Learning how to install a ceiling fan with lights is just the same as regular ceiling fan, except for an option to switch the light on. The light switch is usually a cord switch.
The following are the equipments you will need for the project:
1Electric Drill
2Screwdriver
3Pliers
4Wire Cutter
5Wire Stripper
6Ladder
7Goggles
9Electric Tape
10Pencil Marker
These tools are essential for this project. However, they should not be bought just for this project. If you don’t have an electric drill and you don’t have the budget or don’t see a future need, just rent one.
The ceiling has to be prepared for the project. Usually, the ceiling fan is being installed in place of the light fixtures. The ceiling fan usually takes the place of a light bulb because it will not require additional wiring. Be sure to switch off the main switch before removing the bulb to prevent electrocution. Cover the ends for now with electrical tape to prevent electrocution from accidental contact. It is highly recommended to install the blades after you have installed the fan base. Piecing them together before installing them in the ceiling might be a lot harder to screw the fan and additional components (such as lights).
Installation
Successful installation of a ceiling fan is largely dependent on ceiling fan wiring and proper installation of the mounting bracket. Wiring is very easy since it will only require you to identify the corresponding wires of the ceiling fan with the ones already provided. A good electrical tape should ensure proper connection. Remove at least 1cm of skin of all cords to properly connect them. Properly cover them with an electrical tape to prevent leakage and possible short circuit. Use wire strips to keep them in one place.
ImportantThe mounting bracket should be tightly installed. The bracket should never shake in any condition since it will move the ceiling fan in a very loose manner. Your ceiling fan might fall in your head while still on because of unsecured installation of the mounting bracket. Determine the number of screws in the mounting bracket and map them out in the ceiling with a pencil or any marker. Use the electric drill to pierce holes in the ceiling fast. At this point you can temporarily bring the power but be sure to switch them off again after you have completed the mounting bracket installation.
The rest will be fairly easy as you just tightly screw the mounting bracket by using the right screw driver (flat or Philip screw). Again, check the mounting bracket for any movement.
After successful installation of a mounting bracket, the rest should be easy. Most ceiling fans could be installed to the mounting bracket with a couple of bolts that comes with the fan.
What you’ll have right now is a working fan without the blades. Test your ceiling fan by switching on without the blades. It should give you a good idea on how fast and stable is your ceiling fan. If you think there are no moving parts (except the fan), you can install the blades of the ceiling fan.
If you have to install ceiling fan remote, just make sure you have properly configured the fan box with the ceiling fan. The fan box will usually respond to the remote control after proper installation.
Warnings During Installation• Never in any way install your ceiling fan without proper precaution. The main switch should be off so that no power will be running through your different appliances. Electrocution is very dangerous and is often fatal if you are not careful with your appliances. Your equipments such as pliers and wire cutters should have rubber insulation to prevent you from accidental electrocution.
• Every bolt of the ceiling fan should be tightly screwed. You just need to do this once so you have to do it carefully. Accidents related to ceiling fans will always include head injury. This is often caused by the bolts that are not tightly screwed. Test the ceiling fan if everyone has cleared the room or at least far from the ceiling fan. The bolds of the blade should be properly installed as it could injure anyone if they are hit with the blade.
• Before purchasing a ceiling fan, make sure that your ceiling could handle the weight and the constant rattling of the fan. Most ceilings today could handle an average weighing ceiling fan but if you have been in a home for more than 30 years, check the ceiling for any damages before purchasing any ceiling fan. You might not be able to install a ceiling fan based on the conditions of your ceiling.
When the Ceiling is Not Convenient for the Fans
A weak ceiling should never be installed with a ceiling fan but that doesn’t mean you are out of options. You still can install a ceiling fan even with the weak ceiling. You just have to reinforce the part of the ceiling with a hard plywood panel.
Before purchasing the hard plywood, measure the area of room with ceiling support as you would have to bolt or nail the plywood to the ceiling support. It will not matter if you have hard plywood if you don’t have any proper support from the ceiling. After purchasing the right size of hard plywood, you can simply bolt or nail them and continue with the process of installation.
