Introduction

The first impressions that one gets from this Weller product is that it is not anything terribly special.  To a certain extent, that first impression is founded in truth, but like so many of the popular products in today’s world, the normality of the Weller soldering station is actually its main strength.  It is a complete package built with mass market appeal and for that reason it gets a lot of purchases through the various retailers that sell it.  It’s not going to wow anyone with its high-level specialization anytime soon, but it is a great base soldering product that can be used by anyone that is interested in acquiring a solid soldering tool.

The Complete Package

Part of the mass market appeal aspect of this product is the fact that it is the complete package.  When you purchase the soldering station, you end up receiving the main power unit, the actual soldering station setup, the pencil, the pencil stand and a sponge attached to the pencil stand that you can use to clean the pencil before you store it away. Essentially, all of those tools combined into the soldering station setup, allowing you to get everything that you need to start soldering right away in one convenient package.

Continuity

One of the main problems with a lot of soldering implements is that you need to wait for them to power up not only when you start using them, but also in between jobs if you leave them alone for a long period of time.  This is not true for this product from Weller however, as continuity is built into the makeup of the model.  It is designed such that you can use it in stages as most people do when they are repairing a number of different items (or a number of spots on a single item) at once, yet also has a built in activator that allows it to power down after 99 minutes have passed without you using it.  This time range is viewed by Weller as being the optimal amount of time between allowing people to use it in stages between other finishing tasks and allowing the soldering package to conserve power.  Unfortunately, this particular setting is not customizable, something that would have greatly increased the versatility of this product.

Safety

The safety of the soldering station is top notch, which is another example of the mass market appeal of this product. There are non-burnable rubber cords all over the pencil and various other safety mechanisms that collectively combine to make it very difficult to burn yourself with the implement unless you get careless.  Some high-end soldering aficionados might argue that the safety comes at the cost of functionality and while this might be true to a certain extent, anyone that needs a basic soldering toolkit will not notice the difference.

Final Thoughts

All in all, the Weller is a straightforward mass market soldering implement that gives you exactly what is advertised.  It is a good buy for the average handyperson, although someone with a need for high-end soldering implements might want to look elsewhere first.
