This handy product from Fein could be best described as being the middle ground of absolutely everything as far as power tools are concerned.  The theme of this product is occupying middle ground status across multiple handiwork categories and it is that all around excellence that the Fein MultiMaster has that makes it such a popular product.

The Middle Ground in Specialization

Depending on the particular tool in question, there is an obvious target audience.  Some power tools are designed for people that are interested in amateur hobby work, while other tools are designed for people that need a professional touch.  The Fein MultiMaster occupies the middle ground in this respect because it has elements that make it appealing to the professional whilst at the same time being easy enough to use that the amateur hobbyist can benefit as well.  Very few tools are able to walk this fine line, but the MultiMaster is definitely one of them.

The Middle Ground in Power

In the world of power tools, the concept of power does not just refer to the RPM ratings of the various power tools in question, but also relates to the versatility of the product regarding the amount of work that it can get done.  The Fein product does not have the largest amount of versatility in terms of the number of things you can do with the tool, nor does it have the most raw power.  In both cases however, the Fein tool occupies the middle ground.  It is a balance between individual task power and power of versatility and for that reason actually ends up being far more convenient than some of the other tools.  The modern move of the industry is towards this type of all around convenience and few power tools do it better than the Fein MultiMaster.

The Middle Ground in Task Selection

One of the biggest enemies of the average versatile multi-use power tool is selecting the wrong tasks.  There are some great power tools out there that are under-purchased for no reason other than the fact that they picked the wrong core tasks for their power tool to be able to do.  With the Fein MultiMaster, the core tasks available are sanding, universal cutting, segmented cutting, scraping, dust extraction, sanding and profile sanding.  This gives you a good core from which to start and will allow you to finish many projects with just the use of this single power tool.  If you need more detail work done, you can then choose other multipurpose tools based on those particular needs.

Conclusion

By its very nature, the Fein MultiMaster was not built to be the perfect power tool.  Its consistent occupancy of the middle ground means that it is lacking in the elements of specialization that really make or break many of the other power tools in the industry.  For people that just want basic functionality that is reliable and all comes from one place however, the Fein MultiMaster is easily one of the best power tools around.
