A Healthy Garden Begins with Healthy Soil

Healthy organic soil can reduce pests. Plants will thrive in organically rich soil, which makes them stronger and allows them to fight off pests on their own!  Therefore, using chemicals not only defeats the purpose, it contributes to the bugs in your garden. Start by having a compost bin, as well as a compost pail.  Use the compost pail around the kitchen to collect vegetable scraps.

Non-Chemical Organic Garden Pest Control Works Better and is Safer

Pesticides will not only kill your bugs, but they contaminate the world around you.  There are many ways to prevent bugs from damaging your garden without exposing you and your family to these dangerous pesticides that have been linked to many diseases and health concerns, such as:

  • Parkinson’s
  • Infertility
  • Cancer
  • Birth defects
  • Encephalitis
  • Lymphoma
  • And Many, Many More

Pesticides not only damage people, but they contaminate the air, water, soil, plants, and animals that surround us.

Organic Garden Pest Control Strategy Steps

Gardening is not only about digging and planting seeds.  When you plant a garden, you need to plan for organic garden pest control and weed prevention.  There are some basic steps you can do to minimize the damage of insects and weeds.

  1. Plants have the amazing ability to protect other plants.  However, it is up to you to plant the right plants!  Before you plant your garden, choose the plants that are native to your area.  Native plants are protected better by their own immune systems.  Also, look for plants that are pest-resistant.  By sprinkling these types of plants throughout your garden, your garden will be able to work with you to help prevent those pesky pests.   Learning what plants will attract pests and which ones do not, is a huge step towards organic garden pest control.  This is just one example of many!  If you plant small flowered plants, such as daisies, mint, and rosemary, these plants will attract insects that eat the pests!
  2. Rotate your plants, add mulch, and compost for healthy, fertile soil.
  3. Avoid the bug season by planting early.
  4. There are actually good bugs for your garden!  Allowing these bugs, such as ladybugs, ground beetles and birds to accumulate will help with pest control because they are natural predators to your pests.  Fungi and moss can also infect the pests naturally.
  5. Use a hoe, spade, and your hands to combat weeds.  Get down on the ground with your plants to see what is causing them problems.  Remove pests and plants by hand.
  6. Prune your plants to help remove diseased parts.  Prune back to a main branch or stem.  Do not leave stubs.  This is an invitation to pests to come inside.
  7. Keep a journal for your garden.  This way, you can learn for next year’s garden.

Beat the bugs and enjoy your garden by applying these organic garden pest control strategies.
