Installing wallpaper borders is a simple project that can transform a room from plain and dull to exciting and cool. While installing wallpaper can be a messy project, wallpaper borders are not as messy to deal with. Why is it easier to do than wallpaper? This is because wallpaper borders are narrower than regular wallpaper, making it easier to handle. You also do not have to concern yourself with matching patterns, joining seams, and trimming the edges. Also see how to remove wallpaper.
Tools and Materials for Installing Wallpaper Borders:
- Wallpaper Border – Purchase at least an extra 2 or 3 feet for waste (See below for determining amount)
- Wallpapering Kit (Includes paste brush, smoothing brush, seam roller, water tank and single edge razor blade)
- Wallpaper Paste – One container
- Bucket of fresh warm water
- Sponge
- Step Stool or Ladder for Ceiling Wallpaper Borders
- Pencil and Level for Chair Rail Level Installation
Note: If you plan to paint the wall below the chair rail a different color than the wall above, do this before installing the border. The two colors should join at the bottom or top edge of the border. Make sure the wallpaper border you choose is not see-through.
Note: A pencil line mark should be drawn for wallpaper borders that will be installed at chair level or below the ceiling level. The ceiling will appear lower for wallpaper borders installed directly below the ceiling level.
Installation Steps for Wallpaper Borders:
- Measure the perimeter of the room to find out how much wallpaper border to buy. An example: room is 11 feet wide and 12 feet long. The amount of material is two times the width plus two times the length - 1/8(11x2) + (12x2) =46 3/8. Add an extra 2 to 3 feet to equal 49.
- Chair – Level Wallpaper Border Installation – Measure up from the ground to approximately 36 inches. Make a lightly penciled mark at the selected height. Place the level on the point and mark a level line. Move the level to the end of the first line. Now, re-level and continue the line. You must complete this step all the way around the room until you get to your beginning spot. No line is needed for a border at ceiling level.
- Prepare the wallpaper border strips. Apply the adhesive to the wallpaper border. Even if the wallpaper is pre-pasted, it is a good idea to use an extra adhesive. When applying wallpaper borders to the wall, vinyl adhesive works the best. However, when applying wallpaper borders to wallpaper, vinyl to vinyl adhesive works best. Arrange the wallpaper border in accordion-style without creasing the folds.
- Begin at the corner.
- Take out the smoothing brush and 2-inch wooden edge roller (from wallpaper kit). Smooth brush over wallpaper border to create an initial bond. Use the 2-inch wooden roller to create the final bond.
- Use the sponge and fresh water to clean off the excess adhesive before it dries and before you leave this area.
- Keep going until you reach the next corner. Beginning and ending at corners will help to eliminate buckling in the corner. They can also be easily aligned at this point. If the end of the first strip matches the beginning of the next strip, just butt the strips together and continue on with the process. If they do not match, overlap about 2 inches or until they match. Now you will then do a double cut seam. If you need to do a double cut, do this about half-inch away from the inside of the corner and about an inch away from an outside corner.
That is all there is to installing wallpaper borders – simple and satisfying. You can’t go wrong with wallpaper borders.
