Drywall texturing is a simple process that almost anyone can do. Drywall texturing a wall can be an excellent way to turn a plain wall into a way to accent the overall design of a room. Also see how to repair drywall.

Drywall Texturing Materials:

  • Old paintbrush
  • Stencils
  • Wide bladed taping knife
  • Plastic sheeting
  • Soft bristled brush
  • Large premixed drywall joint compound

Drywall Texturing Steps:

  1. Purchase the materials you need.  Most of the materials can be found at your local home improvement store.  The wide bladed taping knife should be 8 to 12 inches wide.  This will be used to spread a thin coat of the compound on the wall.

  2. Take everything off of the walls.  Be sure to remember the switch plates and receptacle covers.  Move furniture away from the wall that you are drywall texturing.  Cover the furniture with plastic sheeting.

  3. Throw down plastic sheeting on the floor to protect the floor.

  4. Remove any wallpaper before you apply any of the drywall texture.  If you do not remove, the moisture from the drywall compound will loosen the wallpaper and it will break off of the wall.

  5. Apply a primer.  One coat will be enough.  The drywall compound will adhere better and will dry more consistently if the surface is sealed.  An oil based primer/sealer is best for bathrooms and kitchens, as well as for plaster, wood paneling, and stained or damaged surfaces.  A latex based primer will be enough for new dry wall, walls and ceilings previously painted, and concrete surfaces.

  6. Apply about 1/8th inch of the compound along the baseboards, corners, and top of the walls at the ceiling base.  If you want a very rough drywall texture, you will need to apply a thicker amount of the compound.  The good news is that you do not have to be exact.   Drywall texturing is a varied texture; therefore, a little difference in amount will not make a difference overall.

  7. Start in a small area to see how fast you can work.  You do not have to work too fast, as the drywall compound will not dry out for a while.  However, you will get the best results if you work in smaller sections.

  8. Drywall texture can be created in a number of ways.  Here a just a few ideas to consider:  stroke or swirl wet drywall texture with an old paintbrush, wallpaper brush, or sponge.  Use pre-cut stencils or create stencils of your own for a cool design.    Any design can be created on a wet wall of drywall texture.  The limitations are only those of your own creativity.  Get creative.  Your very own hands could create a masterpiece.  However, it is important to use latex gloves, as the drywall compound could be caustic.  Remember using your hands will often create a rougher texture.

  9. Protect the drywall texturing with a couple coats of latex paint.  If you do not paint the drywall texturing, the drywall compound will become brittle as it dries and will be powdery if you rub up against it.  It is not necessary to primer the textured wall before painting.

This is a fun project where you can express your creativity, or it is a perfect project for that person who is not all that creative.  No matter how you drywall texture the wall, it will turn out just right.
