Providing a safe place for your children is critical. Parents and caregivers are responsible for making sure that the environment children live in and play in are safe and secure. Simple steps can be taken to prevent tragic household accidents. Take the time to protect your children from common household dangers with these simple child proofing home steps. 1Eliminate poisonous cleaners and lock up medications: Invest in safer, natural products to ensure a safer environment. If you choose not to invest in these safer products, be sure to keep these cleaners out of the reach of children. Do not rely on child resistant caps, as many times children can figure out how to open them. Lock up any medications and poisons. Just putting them up high is not good enough. They can figure out ways to climb, if they are determined. 2Block stairways: Stairways are the most dangerous and should always be gated. Use a proper child safety gate and do not ever use a pressure mounted gate, as children may be able to put enough pressure on them to dislodge them. 3Keep children out of the dangerous rooms of the house: Rooms such as the bathroom, garage or office can be dangerous. For child safety, put a slide lock or hook-and-eye latch hinge on the door. Also, use door-knob covers. 4Windows: Lock the windows or use guards so that children cannot open them too far. Do not think a screen is enough to keep them from falling out. Screens are not strong enough. Blind cords must be kept away from beds, cribs and any other furniture. Sadly, blind cords are one of the highest causes for strangulation in children and pets. Secure them by tying them up or to the wall. 5Water temperature: Turn it down to a maximum of 120 degrees. 6Emergency escape plan and emergency procedures: Talk to your children about escape routes and what to do in case of an emergency. Be sure there are escape ladders near the second-story emergency exits. Emergency phone numbers need to be written down and placed next to the phone. Even if these numbers are familiar, in the case of an emergency, people could forget. 7Smoke detector: There should be one on each floor of your home. Place them adjacent to bedrooms, in stairwells and in the living and dining area. 8Outlet covers should be replaced with child safety protective covers: Also, for any outlets that are not used, use plastic out plugs. 9Cribs can be dangerous: Be sure your child’s crib bar spaces are not greater than 2 3/8”. 10Corner protectors on sharp furniture: Use foam tape on sharp corners and either get rid of rugs or tape-down loose rugs or electrical cords to prevent tripping. 11Swimming pools: They should be fenced in at least 4 to 5 feet. Use a self-closing, self-latching gate. 12Inspect outdoor play equipment: Tighten up loose nuts, cut off bolts that are protruding, have soft ground covering under play equipment, put on non-slip coating on slipper steps and anchor support legs. There are many child safety products available to help keep your little one safe. Protect your children with these simple steps and know you are doing everything you can to keep your child safe where they live and play. |
