Everyone wants to have the “perfect green lawn”, but it takes some effort to have that lush, healthy green lawn. Here are some green lawn care tips to help you have the perfect green lawn. Also see Going Green Lawn Care

Green Lawn Care Tip #1 - Mowing

There is more to mowing then just getting on the lawnmower and cutting it once a week. It is imperative that you get the mower to the right height for your type of lawn. Generally, grasses will grow best at 2 – 3”. In the summer, you will want to set it even higher. It is also important never to mow below this height, except for the very last mow of the season, when you can put it down to 1.5”.

The height is important when you mow because the grass will use the extra length to absorb sunshine that is required to develop into a healthy plant.

Don’t bother raking. Leave the clippings on the lawn. These clippings decompose and add vital nutrients back into the soil. These clippings contain nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium nutrients needed for optimal growth. Amazingly, clippings can offer up to one-third of the amount of annual nutrients need for your lawn.

Green Lawn Care Tip #2 - Use a Sharp Blade

It does not matter what type of mower you have, what matters is how sharp the blades are. Dull blades will tear at the grass. To check if your blade is dull, take a piece of grass and check to see if there is a jagged brown line across the tip of the cut grass. If you are a homeowner, sharpening your blades twice a year is recommended. If you are a professional mower, you will want to sharpen your blades after every 8 hours of use.

When you mow with a dull blade, the grass is more susceptible to pests and disease.

Green Lawn Care Tip #3 - Do not give your Grass too much Water

Believe it or not, over watering your lawn can cause more damage than under watering. This is because most grasses can stand periods of dryness, but they cannot handle flooding. Green grass requires 1 – 1.5 “ of water every week. This amount of water will actually moisten the soil approximately 4 – 6” below the surface for clay soils and 8 – 10” below for sandy soils.

To find out how much water your lawn is getting, get a rain gauge. Wait until the end of the week to determine if your lawn is not getting enough to have green grass. This is when you can add some supplemental water to the lawn. Just be sure to measure the grass.

Green Lawn Care Tip #4 - Don’t Overfeed when you want Green Grass

You only need to feed your lawn 4 balanced fertilizer applications in a year’s time. These best times to fertilize are: spring, summer, early fall and after the first frost. If there are drought conditions, skip the summer fertilization. However, never skip the fall.

Green Lawn Care Tip #5 - Preventing Problems is Better than Fixing them for Green Grass

Maintain your lawn on a consistent basis.

  • Repair bare spots.
  • Treat for weeds.
  • Aerate lawn once a year to prevent soil from becoming clay like in high traffic areas.

You are on your way to having perfectly green grass with these green lawn care tips.
