Painting Kitchen Cabinets Creates a Brand New Look for your Kitchen. If your cabinets are still in great shape, but are simply outdated, you do not have to spend thousands of dollars on brand new ones. Get a brand new look for your kitchen with a little bit of time, effort and a few dollars worth of paint for kitchen cabinets. Painting your kitchen cabinets not only revitalizes your kitchen, but can completely change the atmosphere in the room. Refacing your cabinets is also an alternative if your cabinets are old.

Paint for kitchen cabinets is generally enamel due to its durability and ease to clean. Oil and latex enamel will both work, but oil-based enamel is recommended since it dries as a harder finish than latex. If you choose to use latex paint for kitchen cabinets, protect the surface with a final coat of sealer.

Materials for painting kitchen cabinets

  • Deglosser
  • Sandpaper, 220-grit or coarser if cabinets are rough
  • Rubber gloves
  • Oil based primer
  • China-bristle paintbrush
  • Tack cloth
  • Wood putty, if using new hardware and holes do not align
  • Paint for kitchen cabinets (recommended: oil based enamel)
  • Sealer if using latex paint

Painting kitchen cabinets is easy with these simple steps!

  • Take off the cabinets, knobs and hinges.
  • Lay the doors down horizontally.
  • Put on rubber gloves.
  • With a lint free cloth, apply deglosser to the cabinets. Deglosser will clean the surface completely and eliminate oily residue and waxy build-up. It will also raise the grain of the wood.
  • With 220 grit sandpaper, sand rough spots smooth. If cabinets are rough, use coarser sandpaper.
  • To remove dust, use a tack cloth.
  • If you change your hardware and the fittings are not the same as your old hardware; simply fill the holes in with wood putty, let dry and sand smooth. Use a tack cloth to remove dust.
  • Use a China-bristle brush to apply oil-based primer. A China-bristle brush is soft and has natural bristles that allow the paint to flow more freely with fewer brush marks. Let dry.
  • Sand the cabinet to remove any imperfections and wipe with tack cloth.
  • Put your first coat of paint for kitchen cabinets on with long, smooth strokes. Do NOT dunk the entire brush into the paint can. Only use the top third of the brush and avoid dripping by wiping off the excess paint.
  • Paint with the grain of the wood.
  • Allow first coat to dry for 24 hours.
  • Sand the surface of the cabinets lightly with fine grit sandpaper. Use tack cloth to remove dust.
  • Apply the second coat of paint for kitchen cabinets.
  • Allow to dry for 24 hours.
  • Replace hardware.

Painting kitchen cabinets is a simple, yet excellent way to create an entirely new look for your kitchen.
