Banquette

Building a banquette for your kitchen can add space to your kitchen, storage and a place to sit down and have a nice meal at the dinner table. Learning how to build a kitchen banquette will help to maximize your kitchen space, as well as save you from having to pay someone to build it for you.

Step #1:Planning

Where exactly do you want to build a kitchen banquette and what is your purpose for building a banquette? Some banquettes are just built along two already existing walls so that they save space, but others are built in a way that allows them to have artistic value. Do you want to have chairs in addition to the banquette benches and table? And finally, would you like cupboards and storage space to be built into the banquette for even more space saving features to the whole operation? Consider the answers to these questions carefully, and then use them to plan out exactly where you want the banquette to be.

Whether you are planning a kitchen remodeling project or just looking for more credible information, Signature Contractors is a great resource for you.

Step #2:Make a sketch of your kitchen banquette

There are many different styles you can choose when building a banquette. Here are the basic styles:

  • Curved
  • Round
  • L-shaped
  • Two benches flanking a long tablee
  • Decide which one will work for you and make your design.

    Step #3:Make a Seat Box

This is the base for your kitchen banquette and is the heart of the entire project for building a banquette. Basically, you are building two boxes to be attached to the wall. Listed below are the steps to build a kitchen banquette seat box:

1Find a comfortable seating height. You can do this by testing out a chair and taking the measurements. Add these measurements to your sketch.

2Use ¾ ply for the top seat box. Use 2x2s for your corner and leading edges support lumber allowing that it sits into the top/open area of the seat box.

3Determine if you want your seat box to be hollow or if you want to add drawers or cupboards. Purchase prefabricated drawers or drawer fronts. Attach these to the seat box with hinges.

4If you want the bench to be full storage, make the seat box two to four inches deeper along the back frame so the bench can be raised.

5If the area you have to work with has unusual contours, make a template out of cardboard and then adjust the primary pieces accordingly.

6Secure your seat box with shims and screw into wall studs so the screws won’t pull out from the wall.

    Step #4- Add trim

Trim out your seat box with crown moldings that match the décor of your kitchen.

    Step #5- Add seat cushions

Seat cushions can be made from foam, foam and spring, filled with hemp fiber or you can buy them pre-made from your local hardware or craft store.

Now you can add your table and any extra chairs and your project to build a kitchen banquette is complete.

I was hoping for more detail on the step by step procedure of how to install a banquette. I'd like to add this to my kitchen to make it roomier and this article did not provide me with that perhaps you can do that next.

Thanks for stating the obvious. I was looking for a "how to" not a "what do you want" - I already know what I want.
