Tuscany style kitchens have become more and more popular in recent years. Before you begin renovating your kitchen you need to understand where the Tuscan style came from, and exactly what you are trying to achieve. The Tuscan style is based on the architectural methods of the Italian Renaissance. It usually involves warm colors, earth tones, gold adornments, and marble or faux marble countertops. The walls are usually decorated with classical paintings or art of some sort.

Along with all of these little decorating details, you should keep in mind the practicality of the new design. As you are designing the layout of your new kitchen, and deciding on cabinets and countertops, look for ways to help yourself stay organized and clean. Think about how difficult an area might be to clean, or whether or not you will have enough pantry space for all of your food. A Tuscany style kitchen should be simple and practical as well as beautiful and inviting. Shop around for everything you will need to make your new kitchen appear to be part of the Italian Renaissance, including paint, cabinetry, flooring, countertops, decorations, and maybe even new dishware.

The Basics

Whether you are renovating your entire kitchen or just changing small parts, the best thing to do is start from the ground and work your way up. To achieve the look of a Tuscan style kitchen you may want to pull out the old tile or linoleum on your floor and go for a brown or beige colored tile. You wouldn’t want to renovate everything in the kitchen and leave the old white and black flooring, would you?

Once you have the flooring installed, it is time to add the woodworks. Tuscan style kitchen cabinets can be found at many home improvement stores. They come in a wide variety of styles, ranging from basic to very intricate, as well as a variety of colors from light brown to very dark wood. Try to match the color of the cabinets with the color of the flooring, or go a few shades lighter. This will keep the kitchen from being dark and gloomy, but still warm. Make sure to account for the hanging cabinets as well.

After the cabinets come the countertops. Faux marble is a very popular countertop to use in a Tuscan style kitchen, but you may also use the same tile as you used on the floor to make a rough custom countertop that will accent your kitchen beautifully. Remember, if you are using floor tiles for your countertops, you should have them sealed to make them easier to clean when the kitchen is in regular use.

Once everything is in place, it is time to paint and decorate the kitchen. Usually a beige or light brown is sufficient to give the kitchen the desired warmth. Once again, try not to go too dark on the paint. Some paints also have little bits of glitter in them to add a light shimmer to the walls once they have been painted. It doesn’t work in every situation, but it can add a little bit of pizzazz to the overall look.

The Finishing Touches

After the paint is dry, you can start adding your own personal touch. This part of the transformation gives you the ability to branch out and decorate your own way. Gold and brass cabinet handles and adornments are very popular and easy to find. Empty wine bottles can be decorated with wine bottle skirts and placed around the room or hung as decorations on the wall. Tuscan style kitchen decorating is merely a matter of using common items to add to the warmth of the room. Even the utensils on the countertop are a part of the style. Generally you can find wooden utensils at a local department store, and even if you do not use them, they will make the Tuscan style kitchen design all the more complete.

If you happen to have enough wall space to add a few small paintings around the room, you should take the opportunity to find some real classical Italian artwork. These can be simple paintings of fruit bowls or vines. Try not to hang too many paints, making the walls look crowded. The Tuscan style kitchen demands an appearance of openness and welcoming. If you clutter the walls, the whole kitchen will feel closed in, opposite of the desired effect. If you are at all skilled with a paint brush you may even decide to paint a few grape vines along the top border of the room yourself. There are also a few companies that offer iron-on wall designs, rather than having to paint the designs on yourself or hire a painter.

If you have a window in your kitchen, new curtains may be in order. You do not have to buy brown or beige curtains to match the rest of your kitchen. Instead, you can use the window as the accent to your Tuscan style kitchen. The light shining through the window will already be an accent and a focal point, so you should utilize this to your advantage by adding colored curtains. A burgundy or light green or color curtain is perfect, with sheer voile to filter the light.

The End Result

When all is said and done, you should have a beautiful new Tuscany style kitchen. It will feel warm and inviting, but at the same time there should be plenty of room for everyone in the family to help out. If you planned everything out well, you will have enough storage space to keep everything organized, and keep the countertops free of clutter, at the same time keeping the kitchen easy to clean. The walls and the floor will be a warm earth tone, and the cabinets will be a bit lighter. The countertops will be faux marble, or perhaps a custom design to match the flooring. The decorations around the room will be gold accents, and the greatest accent of all will be your window. The paintings will be the finishing touch.
