Section One: Measuring and Cutting Wood for Building Kitchen Cabinets
Tip: Always measure twice and cut once. Practice on a scrap piece of wood first. Use clamps on the straight edge of the wood. These clamps will act as a guide.
- The blade should be set so that it will cut just a little deeper than the plywood. Cabinets will be 19 inches deep. The sides of the cabinets will be cut so that it will be 18 ¼ inches. The base will be cut at ¾ inch. Make the base the same width as the cabinets.
- Apply clamps to the base to stabilize it.
- Frame and nail the base together. Nail the bottom of the cabinet to the base using wood glue and 6D finishing nails. Make sure to line it up accurately. Glue will provide additional strength.
Section Two: Gluing and Pre-drilling for Building Kitchen Cabinets
- Once the face frame has been measured and built, apply glue to the edges of both the plywood and face frame.
- Align the edges of the face frame and then clamp. This will eliminate excessive sanding if they do not line up.
- Pre-drill holes at the top, sides and bottom before you secure the face frame to the unit. Pre-drilled holes are necessary to allow the finishing nails to penetrate the wood without bending.
- Use 6D finishing nails to attach the face frame to the unit.
- Be careful not to hit the wood too hard, as finishing nails do not have heads. Cover the head of the nails with wood putty for a more appealing finish.
Section Three: Making the Kitchen Cabinet Doors
- Make sure the wood door fronts overlap the edges by 3/8” before cutting. Doors are made the same as the base and face frames.
- Use a table saw or jigsaw.
- Cut more wood panels so that you can insert them into the frame. It is recommended that you use a scrap piece of wood to make sure of accuracy before you cut into the actual kitchen cabinet piece.
- Fill in any holes with wood putty before sanding, especially if you do not stain the cabinets. If you intend on staining the cabinets, fill in holes with wood putty after staining. This way, you will be able to match the color of the wood putty with the final finish. You can even make your own wood putty by mixing saw dust and wood glue, which would make a perfect match.
- Sand the doors with medium grade sandpaper and then use fine grade sandpaper.
- Vacuum up any dust and wipe the cabinets down with a clean soft cloth before you apply a polyurethane finish, which is found at any hardware or home store. This will help to make the cabinets water resistant, which is very important.
Section Four: Attaching Kitchen Cabinet Doors to the Frames
- Level the cabinet door and align it to properly fit within the hinges.
- The hinges should be attached to the door of the unit by screwing them to the doors with a power drill.
- Repeat these steps for the rest of the cabinet doors until all hinges are in place.
Section Five: Installing the Kitchen Cabinets
- Decide the position that is correct and level it.
- Use a stud finder to help you determine where the studs are in the wall.
- Mark the studs with a pencil on the wall.
- Use a drill to pre-drill the holes in the wall where the cabinets should be attached. If you have walls that are not level, use a shim to align the cabinets to help them hang straight.
Congratulations on building kitchen cabinets that look like you spent a fortune on. By building kitchen cabinets, you can have that dream kitchen you always thought you would never have!
