Kitchen Sink

Installing a kitchen sink may seem like a project best left to the professionals, but you can actually successfully install a kitchen sink with these simple instructions.  Installing a kitchen sink yourself will give you a feeling of accomplishment and save you a lot of money! Need to know how to install a pedestal sink?

What kinds of countertops are available?

Undermount kitchen sinks are sturdy and durable.  They are very easy to clean and maintain. They will fit into almost any style of kitchen.  You can install a kitchen sink, whether it is a single or double bowl sink, into any type of counter.  However, the most recommended materials are:

  • Marble
  • Granite
  • Quartz
  • Soapstone

Other types of prefabricated waterproof counters, such as Corian or concrete can be used, as well.  Laminate is NOT recommended for installing a kitchen sink that is an undermount, as it cannot be completely waterproof.  Many of these materials can be precut, predrilled and sink ready, except for tile.

What kinds of sinks are available?

Undermount sinks come in many different colors and materials. Whether you want a single basin or double sink, the material they are made from should be high quality.

  • Stainless steel
  • Polished or brushed steel are often chosen for dark, solid colored countertops.
  • Ceramic
  • Porcelain
  • Enamel coated steel
  • Cast Iron
  • Copper

Note:  You get what you pay for applies here.  The less expensive styles generally scratch and dent more easily, costing you more to have to replace than if you would have purchased a double sink or single basin sink made of higher quality material.

Other Things to Consider before Installing a Kitchen Sink

Consider what fixtures you would like to have on your sink.  Is it your desire to have a single-handle or double-handle faucet?    Do you want a soap dispenser on it?  Do you want a separate sprayer or one that is attached to the faucet?  What type of faucet would you want?  There are many materials and colors to choose, as well.  It is likely you will want to match your kitchen faucet with your countertop and sink materials.

  • Hi-torque drill with a diamond coring bit
  • Clamps
  • Mounting hardware
  • 100-percent silicone sealant
  • Hammer
  • Screwdriver
  • Denatured alcohol
  • Masking tape
  • Wing nuts

Steps for installing a kitchen sink

Note:  If you feel you are not able to cut an accurate hole for the sink, it is recommended you have a professional fabricator cut the sink hole using a template.  This is an important step.

  1. Cut the sink hole using a template.
  2. Put a 2x4 across the countertop.
  3. Clamp the sink to the underside and adjust until it is centered.
  4. Thread the wing nuts onto the screw heads.
  5. As a test, put your sink in and mark the location for the mounting clips.
  6. Take the sink out and drill ¼” holes to insert the brass inserts.  Tap them in.
  7. Clean the area around the cut out with denatured alcohol to eliminate dust or grit.  Allow this area to dry.
  8. A bead of silicone should be run around the edge.  Re-clamp the sink into place.
  9. Wing nuts should be thread onto the screw heads and tightened to anchor the inserts.
  10. Tighten the wing nuts with your hands to secure the bowl.
  11. Take off the clamps.  Apply masking tape across the back of the countertop.
  12. Mark the layout for your faucet holes.
  13. Drill the faucet holes with a 1-1/4” diamond coring bit.
  14. Before installing your plumbing, allow it to cure overnight.

Installing the Plumbing of a Kitchen Sink

Materials and Tools:

  • Kitchen drain kit
  • Spud Wrench

Steps for Installing the Plumbing of a Kitchen Sink

  1. Purchase a drain kit.
  2. Attach the washer of the new sink basket.  If the washer has a white backing, remove the white strip to expose adhesive.  Center and apply pressure.
  3. Install sink basket from below the sink.  Place the rubber washer on first, then the cardboard washer and follow with the nut.  Be sure the basket is centered.  Tighten the nut into place.
  4. Adjust the extension on the drain to match the basin of the kitchen sink.  Place washer on the sides and secure the nut.
  5. Add the P-trap to make sure the “V” shaped washer points downward.  You will not need any plumber’s putty or tape.  Make sure all nuts are secured.
  6. Turn on the water to be sure you do not see any leaks.

You are now ready to start using your new sink.  Installing a kitchen sink is an impressive accomplishment.
