What types of pedestal sinks are available?

There are a few different styles and materials you can choose for your bathroom pedestal sink. A bathroom pedestal sink is commonly made of either enameled cast iron or vitreous china. The cast iron skin tends to be much more expensive but is very durable. The vitreous china sink tends to vary in price and quality. When choosing pedestal bathroom sink, pay attention to the configurations of the holes, as they can come in three different configurations. Be sure to choose a matching sink and faucet configuration.

Helpful hints prior to installing a pedestal sink

  • As the shutoff valves can break easily, it may be beneficial to have an extra shutoff valve available, as well as new flexible supply tubes that are easier to manipulate.
  • Know where your main shut off is.
  • A small pail or bowl should be set aside in case of leaks.
  • Be sure to have safety glasses on when you are working under the sinks to prevent bits of rust and metal from falling into your eyes.
  • Pedestal Sink Installation Steps

1Support the pedestal sink. To secure a pedestal sink to the wall, there must be something strong to bolt it to. If the wall behind it is tile set on a mortar base and you use heavy-duty wall anchors, this will be substantial enough. If there is only drywall or plaster, you will need to install blocking under the wall surface to support the sink. To install blocking, remove the plaster or drywall and nail or screw in blocking so the sink can be hung. Repair the hole with water resistant drywall.

2Set the basin and pedestal in the position it will be bolted. Prop up the basin with 2x4s to keep it steady. Before bolting, you will want to be sure it is level. At this point, you need to mark the wall for the mounting holes of the basin and pedestal.

3Drill holes according to your markings and the types of fasteners you will be using.

4Install the faucet and drain assembly on the basin. At this point, install the supply lines to the faucet.

5Reposition the basin and pedestal, but only bolt the basin in place. Do not tighten the bolts too tight to avoid cracking the sink. Next, support the basin with 2x4s and slip the pedestal out from under the basin.

6Install the drain and water supply lines and test for leaks. If there are leaks, use Teflon tape and secure the fittings.

7Put the pedestal back into its final position and bolt it to the floor. If the pedestal is not meant to be bolted to the floor, apply adhesive caulk to the bottom and top of the pedestal before putting it into position.

8Caulk the joint located between the sink and the wall.

Allow two to five hours to install your bathroom pedestal sink. Enjoy your stylish pedestal sink with satisfaction of your accomplishment.
