Weeds are not only a nuisance, but they can be damaging to your yard.  Weed killer is your best defense against them taking over your yard.  There are a number of things you can do to prevent or reduce weeds.

Natural Weed Killer Techniques

Soil Solarization – This is a great option for weed control and it will also help to enhance your lawn.  Clear out any roots and till the soil.  Soil Solarization is where you put down a transparent covering, such as plastic sheeting.  This traps the sun’s heat.  After a few days, the soil will reach temperatures to above 140 degrees.  This process will kill insects, plant diseases, harmful fungi, and weeds.  It will also help the microorganisms within the soil.  It allows plants to draw on the nutrients.  This makes seeds germinate quicker to produce faster growing and stronger plants.

Aerating – If you do this regularly, you can stop the growth of weeds.  This is the process of removing small cores of soil, which leaves cavities that promotes healthy plant growth.  Healthy plant growth leaves less room for weeds.   Weeds tend to flourish in areas of compacted soil.  When you aerate your lawn, you will prevent weed growth.

Fertilizing – This helps promote growth of healthy plants. When you fertilize during the peak growth times, grass and plants will grow, which will not leave room for the weeds to grow.  However, if you fertilize during dormant periods, you can stimulate the growth of weeds. There are a variety of natural fertilizers you can choose from that are healthier for your plants and grass.

Mowing – Keep grass mowed to the high end.  If you leave it at over an inch, this will help you to fight weed growth by giving weeds less time to grow.  It also keeps them from getting the sunlight weeds need to grow.

Natural Weed Killer Products

Organic weed control is a much better option.  Organic weed control is healthier for not only your grass and plants, but for your family and pets.  Here are just a few ideas to help control those weeds in your yard.

Corn Gluten Meal

This is a natural weed and feed fertilizer.  If it is broadcast, it can prevent grass burs, crabgrass, and other weeds that are germinated by seed.  It is important to broadcast before the weed seeds germinate.

Molasses

This can be used to control weeds, including nut sedge.  You can buy this in dry or liquid form.  The dry product used for fertilizer and fire ant repellent will be used at 20 pounds per 1000 square feet.  When you double that rate, it will cause an herbicidal effect.  For nut sedge, use a cup of liquid molasses per gallon of water.

Vinegar

Use 10% white vinegar made from grain alcohol at full strength.  Here is the formula:

  • 1 gallon of 10% (100 grain) vinegar
  • 1 ounce orange oil
  • 1 tbsp molasses
  • 1 tsp liquid soap
  • Mix together and do not add water.  Before each use, shake well.  Spot spray the weeds.  Keep the spray off of your plants.  This mixture can be sprayed on the base of trees and other woody plants, as it will not hurt them.  It is best when used on warm or hot days.

These weed killer techniques and products are much better options for a healthy lawn.
