raised garden

Araised garden bed is generally a raised bed garden that is raised 16 inches or more above the ground.  It is used to make planting and weeding easier, as well as to create an attractive design for your landscape.   Building a raised garden bed is a simple project that can be completed in just a few days. Garden beds are great for growing your own herbs.

  • Interlocking concrete blocks
  • Fiberglass reinforcing stakes
  • Sting
  • Gravel
  • Soil
  • Shovel
  • Flat bladed spade
  • Rake
  • Hammer
  • Wheelbarrow
  • Garden hose
  • 4x4

This Article is divided into Four Sections for Building a Raised Garden Bed

  1. Laying out the Raised Garden Bed
  2. Excavating the Raised Garden Bed
  3. Stacking the Raised Garden Bed Blocks
  4. Filling the Raised Garden Bed with Soil

Section One:  Laying out the Raised Garden Bed

  1. Be sure you are able to reach all parts of the raised bed garden without stepping into it.  If there will be access to two sides, you can make it up to seven feet wide.  If you are only able to access from one side, you should only make it up to four feet wide.
  2. Pound stakes into the ground at the corners and stretch string between them to make straight layout lines.  For a curved line, lay down a garden hose in the shape of how the raised bed garden will look.  To mark the line, pour sand over the length of the garden hose.

Section Two:  Excavating the Raised Garden Bed

  1. Dig the sod in the area where the raised garden bed will be.  With a flat-bladed spade, cut clean lines at the perimeter of the bed.
  2. Dig out all the roots.
  3. Tamp the soil firm where the blocks will sit with a 4x4 or rented hand tamper.
  4. An inch or two of sand or gravel should be spread over the tamped area.  The top of the layer should be about an inch or so below the level of the grass.  This is to help ensure there is drainage under the blocks to reduce the chance of buckling in extreme cold conditions.
  5. Rake surface smooth.

Section Three:  Stacking the Raised Garden Bed Blocks

  1. Put the first row of blocks around the perimeter of the raised garden bed.  The tops of the blocks should be aligned to form a level surface for the next row.
  2. Some blocks come with pins or stakes.  This is the time to pound them through the blocks and into the ground with a hammer.
  3. The next row of blocks should be put on top so they overlap the first row.
  4. Keep adding rows until it is to your desired height.  For the last row, you may wish to have a more finished look, rather than an open-celled, top surface.

Section Four:  Filling the Raised Garden Bed with Soil

  1. Lay a few inches of sand or gravel.
  2. Top with at least 8 inches of the correct soil for your plants mixed with peat.  This allows for better draining soil.

Congratulations on building your raised garden bed.  Raised garden beds are a great addition to any landscape.
