Install Vinyl

Installing vinyl flooring is an excellent choice to include in your home improvement plans. Installing vinyl flooring is not only practical and durable, but it is also an appealing choice for high-traffic areas, such as the kitchen or bathroom. Best of all learning how to install vinyl flooring is simple with these step by step instructions on how to install vinyl flooring.

Materials and tools needed for installing vinyl flooring:

  • Vinyl flooring
  • Tape measurer
  • Patching compound
  • Small putty knife
  • Utility knife
  • Roll of craft paper
  • Masking tape
  • Double stick tape
  • Handsaw
  • Vinyl adhesive
  • Fine-notched trowel
  • Steel hand roller
  • 4 pieces of 1/8” plywood for sliding around furniture

Steps on how to install vinyl flooring:

1Measure the room’s dimensions accurately. Add a few inches to each of the measurements for extra material for cutting, trimming and centering the pattern.

2Your sub-floor should be flat and completely smooth. For concrete sub-floors, fill in holes or low lying areas with a patching compound. The compound should be mixed with water to the consistency of pudding and spread on with a small trowel. Dry for at least an hour.

3Remove shoe molding.

4Lay the vinyl flooring in the room. Mark the area where there will be excess to be cut out. Cut it with a utility knife.

5For corners that are cut, reinforce with two pieces of masking tape to protect the corner from tearing when the vinyl flooring is being moved into position.

6Lay the flooring in its final position. Allow a lot of excess around each wall. Make relief cuts around obstructions. For inside corners, cut small half circles until the vinyl lays flat. For outside corners, make straight relief cuts.

7Roll back the vinyl flooring that is next to the wall. Create a partial template along the wall to make an exact cut. Make it out of craft paper along the length of the wall. You can use single sheets of 8 ½ “x 11” paper if you don’t have a craft roll, and tape them together.

8The edge of the craft paper should be lined up against the wall and taped lightly down to the floor with small pieces of masking tape to keep the paper from moving. Apply a strip of double stick tape every two feet or so to the craft paper. Remove the backing from the top side of the tape.

9The vinyl should now be rolled over the template and pressed down firmly as to adhere the vinyl to the template. Lift the vinyl back up with the template stuck to the vinyl backing. The vinyl should be cut on the outer edge of the paper.

10Take a straightedge and a protective piece of scrap wood to put underneath the vinyl. Cut the vinyl along the template edge.

11Repeat steps 7 through 10 for each wall in the room.

12Take perimeter adhesion and use a fine-notched trowel to spread a band along the wall about 6 inches wide. Perimeter adhesion will allow the flooring in areas that cannot be adhered to float over the top of any imperfections. The vinyl should be placed down into position. Use a hand roller or block of wood wrapped in a clean cloth to seal the flooring to the adhesive.

13If your choose to use full adhesion, spread the adhesive material onto the entire floor surface and roll the vinyl flooring back down into place. Apply firm pressure with a hand roller or block. Allow to dry for 2 to 4 hours. When using full adhesive on entire floor, keep traffic and furniture off of it for at least 24 hours.

14Replace your shoe molding and trim.

15Once adhesion is dry, move your furniture back in with the four sheets of thin plywood.

16Clean up your new floor with a damp mop.

Take a step back and take pride in your success of installing vinyl flooring in your home.
