With the current energy prices people are taking a look at alternatives such as pellet stoves. We examine in this article pellet stove prices and help you decide is this a worthwhile investment? Pellet stoves (see Tips to Purchasing Pellet Stoves)Pellet are alternatives to wood stoves, which have been around for a very long time. Wood burning stoves have not been popular throughout most of their existence mostly because of the high level of expense that has been attached to them. As energy prices across the board begin to rise however (including the cost of natural resources such as wood), more and more people are starting to take a closer look at this pellet stoves as a cost efficient alternative to wood stoves, natural gas, or electric heat. Breaking down the CostThere are two primary costs that you are going to have to deal with when it comes to pellet stoves. The first is the actual cost of the stove. The cheaper pellet stoves will be priced in the $1,700 to $2,000 range whereas the more expensive ones will be $3,000 or even more in the case of some ultra high end products. The quality and overall lasting power of the stove is directly related to the cost you incur for it, but even the cheapest pellet stove will last you a significant number of years. Do not always go for the cheapest one as you need to look at your heating area (cubic feet/meters) as a major factor in the BTU output of your pellet stove. Related Articles on Pellet Stoves: The next primary cost that you need to deal with when considering the purchase of a pellet stove is the installation of that stove. You cannot install a pellet stove on your own in most cases, since a large amount of the work involved is of a very delicate and highly specialized nature. You need to hire someone to install it for you and depending on the demand and the availability of personnel in your area, typical costs for the installation of a pellet stove can be as low as $150 or as expensive as $400 or more depending on your heating requirements. (See also Burning Pellets for Better Heating) Pellet Stoves vs. Wood StovesThe immediate comparison that most people are likely to make is pellet stoves to wood stoves since the latter are the most common stoves in North America. Pellets for your pellet stove are sold by the ton and range from $130 to $200 for a single ton. Firewood for your wood stove on the other hand is measured by a unit known as a cord and a single cord can cost anywhere from $100 to $175 depending on certain geographic characteristics and availability. On the face of it, this would seem to indicate that wood stoves are cheaper than pellet stoves, but to make that determination you really need to know how much of each you will need. Barring anything being wrong with either stove, the wood stove will use 3-4 cords annually whereas the pellet stove will use 2-3 tons per year and most experts would usually classify one ton of pellets as being worth roughly 1.5 cords of firewood based on their usage. With that in mind, it then becomes clear that pellet tons are more cost efficient than firewood cords. The quality of your fuel pellet can greatly change these numbers. Please take a close look at the various types: wood, grass, coal, nutshell and corn pellets. You should also look into the fact that a high quality fuel pellet used with a pellet stove will produce a lot less ash and burns cleaner than a wood stove, thus contributing to a greener environment. One last bit of advice to keep in mind however is that pellet costs rise dramatically if they need to be shipped over long distances. Therefore, pellet stoves are the best option only when you have a good source of pellets reasonably close to where you live. |
