Window Weather stripping

Did you know the little bit of air you feel through the crack in your door or window is responsible for one third of the heat loss or air conditioning loss in your home? This is according to the U.S. Department of Energy.

Keep the heat or air conditioning in your home, as well as reduce your money being spent on energy by installing window weather-stripping and door weather-stripping.

Installing window weather-stripping or door weather-stripping is simple and can be done in a matter of minutes. Listed below are the tools, materials and steps to install weather-stripping and save on heating cost.

Tools for installing window weather-stripping:

  • Utility Knife
  • Tape measure
  • Hammer

Materials for installing window weather-stripping:

  • Self-adhesive foam insulation
  • V-channel weather-stripping
  • Finish nails
  • How to weather-strip a window:

There are two different methods for window weather-stripping for a double-hung and casement window. The double-hung windows need two types of weather-stripping, as the casement windows need one type.

    Double-Hung Windows:

1The bottom of the sash should be cleaned with soap and water and allowed to dry.

2The foam weather-stripping should be cut to length.

3Take the back off the foam and press the adhesive side of the foam against the bottom of the sash. This will form a tight bond.

4The jamb should be cleaned with soap and water and allowed to dry completely.

5Cut two pieces of V-channel 1” longer than each sash.

6Take the back off the V-channel and apply it between the sash stiles and the jamb. Press down firmly on the channel into the jamb.

7Secure the weather-stripping by driving finish nails into the jamb. Make sure the sash does not catch on the nails.

8Clean the back of the bottom sash. Dry completely.

9Cut a piece of the V-channel the same width as the sash.

10Peel the back from the channel and press it firmly onto the raised 3” to 4” of sash even with the top. The V-channel will open facing up allowing the weather-stripping to compress when the window is closed.

    Casement Windows:

1Open the window. Clean the outside and allow it to dry completely.

2The self-adhesive foam should be cut to fit the top, bottom and sides of the stops.

3Remove the back from each piece of foam. Press it into the outside of the stops.

    Tools for installing door weather-stripping:

    • Utility knife
    • Tape measure
    • Hammer
    • Tin snips/side cutters
    • Screwdriver
    • Screws

    Materials for installing door weather-stripping:

    • Self-adhesive foam weather-stripping
    • Door sweep

    How to weather-strip a door:

Door weather-stripping requires two different kinds of weather-stripping. Also, sweeps are required for the bottom, as well as self-adhesive foam for the top and slides.

    Installing Self-Adhesive Foam:

1The stop molding should be cleaned and allowed to dry completely.

2The self-adhesive foam should be cut to fit each side and top of the door.

3Take the back from the foam and press it into the inside of the stop molding.

    Installing a Door Sweep:

1Cut the sweep to fit the door.

2Close the door and screw the sweep to the door. Be sure that its bottom is in contact with the floor.

Weather-strip your windows and doors and notice the reductions in your energy bill right away!
