![]() If you are ready to tackle the challenge of a garage door installation, this article will explain how to install a sectional garage door that is equipped with a torsion spring system. A sectional garage door is one that travels up and down on rollers that ride along tracks at each side of the door. Related articles: Garage Door Insulation WARNING! If the garage door is not equipped with a torsion spring system and only has a standard torsion spring, you should call a professional door installer. A standard torsion spring mechanism is extremely dangerous, as it is under extreme tension.Garage door installation process:1Attach weather stripping to the bottom edge of the first panel. 2Set the panel in the doorway and nail it partway into each jamb at an angle, so they wedge the door in place. 3Attach hinges to the top edge of the door. 4Assemble the different pieces of the vertical, curved and horizontal tracks according to manufacturer’s instructions. 5The rollers and necessary brackets on the door section should be installed, as well as any wall or jamb mounted brackets (per manufacturer’s instructions). 6On one side of the doorway, slip the vertical track onto rollers of the first door section. Do the same process on the other side. 7Install rollers on the second section. 8Find someone to help you lift the section. Set into place and slip rollers into vertical tracks at both sides of the doorway. 9Hinges from the first section should be fastened to the second section. Generally, you can you fasten using a power drill with a screwdriver tip or nut driver. 10Install the third section with the same procedures above. 11Be sure door is level and check the vertical track for plumb. 12Fasten top plates of both vertical tracks to the wall. The lag screws should penetrate the framing members amply, because the door will have considerable force as it moves up and down. 13Jamb brackets should be attached to the tracks. Fasten them to the framing members. Make sure lag screws are firmly screwed into the framing. Do not tighten lag screws as you may need to adjust the tracks. 14Curved and horizontal tracks should be installed. Bolt pieces together. If you need to, you can rest the horizontal track on top of a ladder. 15Check the horizontal track for levelness. Cut the rear track hanger to the length needed for supporting track. 16Screw track hanger to solid framing, such as a ceiling joist or blocking. 17Mount the track loosely to the hanger. Mount the other horizontal track as above. 18Put in last door section. 19Remove any temporary nails. 20A torque tube will be installed for lift assistance. If you intend on using a garage door opener, use the garage door opener installation instructions and wait to install the tube. If you will not be using a garage door opener, install the torque tube according to manufacturer’s instructions. 21Roll the door up about 4 feet to check the alignment of track. Make adjustments. 22Important: Tighten all fasteners. Be sure to follow the garage door installation procedures precisely. Do not leave out any steps and your garage door installation project will be a safe success. |
