Garage Floor Insulation

Heat escapes from your home when you have a floor that is not insulated. In this article, you will learn garage floor insulation steps to help you create a plywood subfloor, as well as how to install a floor surface as part of your garage floor insulation.

Garage floor insulation steps for preparing the floor

1Vacuum floor

2If insulation requires a vapor retardant, cover the floor with 6-mil polyethylene sheeting.

3Overlap the seams 6 inches and tape them.

4Stick the polyethylene sheeting to the concrete with a little bit of caulk.

Garage floor insulation steps for adding sleepers and foam

1Take pressure-treated 2x4 sleepers and arrange end to end around the perimeter of the floor. The sleepers should be fastened to the floor with a power-actuated nailer or 2 ¼ inch masonry nails.

2Install a gridiron of sleepers across the floor. Center every 16 inches. Cut the panels of 4 feet wide and 1 ½ inch thick foam insulation into three 12 ½ inch wide strips. Arrange the strips between the sleepers.

Garage floor insulation steps for attaching the sub floor

1Put down ¾ inch plywood perpendicular to the sleepers.

2Stagger the seams between the panels by beginning every other row with a half sheet of plywood.

3Attach the plywood to the 2x4s with a 2 inch ringshank or 2 inch galvanized screws.

Garage floor insulation steps for installing a floor surface

There are different things you can do for your floor surface. The G-floor from Better Life Technologies has been recommended for garage floors. It comes in nine foot widths and rolls out perfectly flat without the need for adhesives.

Other benefits of the G-floor

  • Durable
  • Tough
  • Appealing to the eye
  • Oil and gasoline resistant (good for parking cars)
  • Offer added garage floor insulation
  • These steps will help you use your floor surface as added garage floor insulation.

    1Roll out the flooring.

2Trim edges with a hook shaped utility knife blade.

3Cut the floor to fit as you work your way around the garage.

4Apply double stick carpet tape to the back of the floor to hold the seams tightly together.

5Remove the protective liner from one side only because you want the tape to stick only to the covering and not the underlayment. This will allow the floor covering to expand and contract with temperature and humidity changes.

6Roll out bubbles with a push broom from the center to the edges.

Your garage floor insulation project is now complete. You can now reap the benefits of lower utility bills and an impressive garage.
