The two most common household door knobs are the deadbolt and the spring latch.  The door knobs with a spring are easier to install.  The following are instructions on how to install a deadbolt, as these are used in most households because they are more secure. On a deadbolt lock, the outside knob will have a keyhole, while the knob inside will have a button for locking.  

Steps to take off a Deadbolt Door Knob

• Take off the inner knob by unscrewing the two screws.  The inside half will pull off.  If the screws are not visible, look for a small button along the shaft.  It will pull off the stem once it is pushed.
• Remove the cover.  Slip your screwdriver under the small notch and pop off the cover.
• Remove the two screws that hold the lock and faceplate in place.

Installing a deadbolt door knob

• Insert the door knob in the opening from the outer side.  Be sure to line up the opening and the locking mechanism with the latch.  This is the spring loaded piece in the edge of the door that engages the door jamb to secure the door.
• Install two screws into the faceplate.
• The cover is to be snapped along the bent wire latch that holds it in place.
• Depress the latch on the shaft.  Slide the door knob onto the shaft.
• Test the lock.
