I have always learned from my father, and my grandfather, to use an old rag when you stain rather a foam brush. Is there a good reason to this? I never really fought with them on their logic because I didn't want to seem unhappy with it.

How do you stain?

I've never heard of staining with a rag before. I have always used those foam brushes that you can buy in bundles. They do the job for me, and I seem to have no problems. Might just be a preference.

Yes, we use the old rags to stain. It makes it so that there are no brush marks on the wook. Also, it makes it so there are no drips. If you are staining moldings that aren't up yet, using an old rag makes the staining go so much quicker than using a brush.

I would use Colron.
The colour Jacobean Oak is very dark - probably the blackest stain I have seen unless they have brought out another one.
It tells you what to do on the tin but as an idea I would rub down the existing "finish", apply the stain, and when it was properly dry I would then varnish it with Yacht Varnish.
Hope this helps.

Old rags works perfectly fine with me also. But if you have other options that are available, then do it.
