Humidifier Tips

Before buying a humidifier, take into consideration your needs. Purchase a hygrometer to measure the humidity level in your home to determine if you even need a home humidifier or not. A hygrometer is inexpensive and can help you monitor the air you breathe and keep it at optimum level.

Humidifier Buying Advice

  • Determine if you want a cool mist or warm mist home humidifier. If you have small children, you will want to stay away from the warm humidifier, as there is a risk of burns.
  • Determine the capacity of the room you want to humidify. Take the measurements of your room. A 700 sq. ft. model will humidify a bedroom or small room. If you purchase a home humidifier that is too large for the room, then condensation will begin to appear on the windows, which will cause bacteria and mold in the room.
  • Consider refill convenience. Portable room humidifiers come in varying sizes, usually from 1 liter to 5 gallons or larger. The size you get depends strictly on convenience. How often do you want to refill the home humidifier? Generally, a 2-gallon home humidifier will run for one and a half days, where a 1 liter home humidifier will have to be refilled every 8 hours. This time can be decreased if it is run on high.
  • Pay attention to the maintenance and ease of handling. When comparing home humidifiers, check how the water tank is removed and refilled. Also, check to see how often the filter will need changed. Check how easily it is to buy refills and how easy they are to change. You may want to buy a few filters when you purchase your home humidifier.
  • Check to see what the noise levels are and what settings are offered. If the humidifier is for a bedroom, you may wish to find a unit that has a low or silent option. Be sure that the home humidifier has at least a high and low setting.
  • Does it have a safety shut off? This is extremely important. The humidifier will shut off automatically if the water level reaches a certain level.
  • Does your home humidifier need a filter? While it is not necessary that you purchase a home humidifier with a filter, they do have their benefits. When water is expelled as a vapor, the mineral deposits form a white dust which accumulates on the furniture in the room. A filter will trap these deposits and reduce the presence of the white dust.
  • All home humidifiers require cleaning as to reduce the growth of bacteria. Bacteria can grow in stagnant water and will be put into the air, causing more problems. If you are not vigilant at sanitizing your humidifier, consider paying the extra cost and buy one that has an ultraviolet sterilizer and HEPA filter.

  • This buying guide has been designed to help you purchase a portable home humidifier. Take into consideration the humidifier buying advice above and you will find a home humidifier that will be effective for your home and needs.
