Closet

Try these closet organization ideas to help increase your storage space.  Many times, people waste the space they have in their closets.  With a few closet storage ideas, such as adding closet shelves or simply looking at your closet from a different angle, you can have the closet storage you want.  These closet organization ideas will give you a sense of peace as you get rid of that clutter and become more organized.

  • Get Rid of the Clutter:  Really look at those items in your closet.  Many times the closet is a place we just throw things we do not really care for or will never really use.  Be honest with yourself and get rid of those old pair of pants you have held onto for five years because you may someday fit into them.  Donate that purse you received as a gift, but you don’t really care for!  Why waste your space on items that will never leave the closet?

  • Step Back and Take a New Look:   When you take a step back and try to look at your closet from a different angle, you will be surprised at how much space you are wasting.    You need to look from a vertical dimension, in both directions.  Look at the ceiling down to the floor.   Consider adding bins on the high shelves.  Add roll-out boxes on the floor.  Put off-season storage items in less accessible places.

  • Let there be Light:  You need light in order to keep your closet organized, as well as to find various things.  Fluorescent lighting is the best lights for a closet.  Incandescent bulbs are a fire hazard in such a small space.

  • Consider Techniques:   Closet storage ideas work best when you know how you will be using them.  If you bunch socks instead of roll them, you will need more space.  Same as if you fold and stack shirts instead of hang them.  You will need more closet shelves to accommodate your techniques.  Consider how much you actually hang to what you like to stack.  Add more closet shelves and less hanging space or vice versa.  For more hanging space, consider adding another rod.  It all depends on how you like to do things.  Design your closet so that the items you use the most are at eye level.

  • Add Accessories:  Include all the different varieties of accessories into your closet storage ideas.   Check out the different options available, such as:  see-through wire bins, acrylic or glass fronted drawers, drawers with dividers, belt and tie racks, shoe racks, closet shelves.   Make sure the closet shelves and drawers are adjustable and movable from place to place within the closet.  These are excellent closet organization ideas to keep your closet organized and all those miscellaneous items off the floor!

  • Eliminate Mold and Mildew:  It is important to have some airflow in the closet.  If there is not airflow in the closet, your closet will become a breeding ground for mold, mildew and insects.  Consider adding a bathroom style fan in your closet or a small dehumidifier to help things from getting musty.

  • Hang long clothes on one side and short clothes on the other.  This will give you room for drawers or even a dresser.

Make your own closet shelves with these simple steps for a basic bedroom closet:

  1. Measure the horizontal and vertical dimensions of each wall.

  2. Divide up wall space into the space that works best for you.

  3. You will need to keep in mind that clothes need 40inches of vertical space.

  4. Mark a level line on the closet walls at 68 inches and nail 1 x 4 cleats along this line.  Cleats support the shelf and provide an anchor point where rod supports will be installed to secure the rod.  Side cleats can run wall to wall in a shallow closet, but must extend to a minimum of 15 ½ inches from the back wall to support a 16 inch shelf, as well as provide backing for the rod cups.  The wall to wall cleats are a better option.

  5. When trying to decide on the top shelf, pay attention to the header above the door opening.  The side cleats for a 12 inch shelf should be at least 14 inches long.

  6. This is the time to consider those closet storage ideas to improve storage.  One closet storage idea is to add a partition in the center and make a double rod and shelf on one half.  Another closet storage idea is to put two partitions in at about 16 inches apart.  Install a column of shelves in the middle, with a rod and shelf on one side and a double rod and shelf on the other.

  7. Mark the elevation of the shelves.    Consider that your layout lines will be at the bottom of the shelf and top of the cleat.  Mark a level line on the wall at the elevations of your horizontal layout marks.

  8. Find the studs in the wall by searching with a hammer and nail below the layout line.  You will be able to locate the remaining studs on the wall with the end of the tape.

  9. Use a level along the back wall as a straight edge when you are checking for the shelf location for square.

  10. Mark vertical lines for partitions by marking both sides of the partition location.  If the partition material is ¾ inch thick, vertical lines will be parallel lines at ¾ inch apart.

  11. Nail the back cleats into position at the layout lines.

  12. Measure the top of the cleat to decide the shelf length at the rear wall.   Measure, mark and cut the first shelf.  Test the first shelf in the closet.  Then use it as a pattern to mark the remaining closet shelves in the same stack.

  13. Tip the shelves into position.

Use your closet space wisely with these closet organization ideas.

  • madrid  - drawers in the bedroom
I gave him the same look he started moving toward the doorway coming toward me. Then his sister came into the room and started talking to me. He stayed in the other room but finally came in and asked me if I wanted to go out to dinner. We looked at each other with an understanding.

  • Lisabenson  - So much good information
There is so much good information I don’t know where to start. My favorite part was talking about the differences of folding and hanging clothes. I did not realize that folded clothes took up more room overall. I found a good suggestion at organizeyourclosetnow.com to remove seasonal clothes from the closet and place it into storage. Keep supplying the great ideas.
