A wall air conditioner is perfect for that home that does not have a window in the room that needs to be air conditioned, such as a living room that only has a bay window and sliding glass doors.  A wall air conditioner is significantly less expensive than central air conditioning units. Also look at Portable Air Conditioners.

This type of unit can cool a room as big as 1,000 square feet.  In fact, if you have a small house it is possible it can cool the entire home.  However, your home would need good insulation, as well as portable fans to move the air to the rest of the home.

Wall Air Conditioner Benefits

A wall air conditioner will allow you to keep your window view this summer, and will also allow you to use your window.  If the days are not as hot, you could open the window without pulling out a window air conditioner just to enjoy the outside air.

Once you install your wall air conditioner, it will stay in place year round.  You do not have to mess with pulling it out of a window and dragging it out to the garage, basement, or attic for storage.

The Best Place to Install a Wall Air Conditioner

Mount a wall air conditioner on a Sheetrock wall that is located on an outside facing.  Unfortunately, a wall air conditioner cannot be mounted on a stone, brick, or concrete wall since a hole will need to be cut to accommodate the unit.

Make sure the wall does not have any pipes or electrical lines within it.  If this is the only wall you can mount a wall air conditioner, then it is a possibility that you can have the electrical lines moved.  Be sure to contact a professional electrician for this project.

Make sure there is an electrical socket close to the window air conditioner so you can actually use the air conditioner. The voltage of the circuit you will need will depend on the size of the unit.  Generally, it will only require a 115-volt or a 230-volt circuit.  However, if the air conditioner is large, it may need its own circuit.

Common Obstacles when Installing a Wall Air Conditioner Unit

There are some common obstacles you may come across when installing your wall air conditioner unit.  However, these are problems that can be easily fixed or avoided.

The measurements are crucial to a successful installation.  To ensure exactness, measure and then measure again.  A sleeve will need to be inserted to support the weight of the wall air conditioner unit.  The wall itself cannot support this amount of weight.  The sleeve will need to be the exact size for the outer frame, as well as be exact on the inner frame to be able to fit the window air conditioner.

While exactness is very important, it is generally very hard to achieve it.  Even if you were extra careful, it is very common for either the hole or the sleeve to not fit perfectly.  In this case, you can add insulation.  Insulation foam or other insulation material can be used.  Make sure all holes and cracks are insulated so that heat does not get in and the cold air does not get out.

A wall air conditioner can be a great addition to your home and can keep your home cool during those hot, summer months.
